In early July 2026, the Hefei Institutes of Physical Science under the Chinese Academy of Sciences announced that two key superconducting magnets for the fusion reactor of China's 'Artificial Sun' project have completed development, acceptance, and full-parameter testing. Among them, the toroidal field superconducting magnet weighs 582 tons, with a volume 1.3 times that of the same type of magnet in the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) and an energy storage capacity three times greater, making it the world's largest superconducting magnet for a fusion reactor. This marks a major breakthrough for China in nuclear fusion technology.
